In my artwork, I find ways of telling stories that have a basis in my own experience, and what I hear and see, and situating them within a broader context. This work has taken the form of handmade artists’ books, video (including stop-motion animation), drawing, painting, printmaking, and writing. I am experimenting at the moment with work that bridges these disciplines. My artists’ books in particular often have their origins in my work as a Spanish interpreter working in courts, prisons, and jails - and now in schools and with an immigrant defense organization. My art-making begins with direct, concrete personal experience and from there often expands, through research and conversation, into the background and context within which that experience dwells. I am incredibly honored to be invited to be part of this inspiring collective.
