When I began studying bibliography in 2007, many in the field were less than receptive to the idea that the materiality of books was just as reflective of racial and ethnic identity construction as the contents they contain, but now this once radical idea has been embraced almost as a given. I have worked for many years to elucidate those connections both in my scholarship and in my practice as a librarian. For me, living during the era that has created the current state of bibliography, letterpress printing, and the book arts is a dream come true. And it is at once exciting and daunting to know that there is still so much more work to be done.
