Alisa Banks

I create work that reflects on personal (mine and others) experiences and how those experiences shape perceptions of self in relation to one’s environment and/or society in general, and race and racism, in particular. My projects are created through research and interviews, writing, and much editing of both form and content, and also consider the performative and sensory experiences of readership.

I grew up in a military family with roots in southern Louisiana. Though we lived in and out of the US, my parents kept us in contact with their culture, and when possible, frequent visits to relatives in their hometown. As a perpetual outsider, I am intrigued by the concept of “home.”

Processes used are varied and are selected based on subject and perception, though textile and fiber manipulative processes such as embroidery, sewing, twisting, and tying are often featured, relating to my Louisiana roots.
